TRAILER: MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

IN TWEET: THE FULL PROMO REEL FOR THE NEW SERIES “MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.” COMING TO ABC THIS FALL.

In advance of tomorrow’s full CLIPPED/SE dedicated to the new Fall series on ABC, here’s the extended trailer for what is already the most anticipated series of the 2013/14 season: MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. It’s got all of the signature Joss Whedon touches and big-screen quality production values. Funny, action-packed and Couslon-centric. Right now, it looks like must see stuff. Enjoy!

CLIPPED/SE: NEW FALL SERIES [FOX]

The cast of SLEEPY HOLLOW on FOX.

IN TWEET: IT’S ANOTHER SPECIAL UPFRONTS EDITION OF “CLIPPED” FEATURING EXTENDED TRAILERS FOR NEW SERIES COMING THIS FALL. UP TODAY IS FOX.

This is one of the shakiest slates I’ve seen from FOX in awhile. There’s one buzzy re-imagining here that might generate some numbers (hint: it’s pictured above) and a surprisingly funny rip-off of…er…I mean, homage to STRIPES but the rest of the lot runs the gamut from utterly conventional to outright wretched.

Again, because networks will continue to tweak and refine their new offerings, I am not going to include much specific schedule information. Like the NBC post yesterday, this list includes only new Fall series. We’ll cover the FOX midseason newbies at a later date.

ALMOST HUMAN

CLICK for more information on ALMOST HUMAN.

ALMOST HUMAN looks like castoff bits of ROBOCOP, DOLLHOUSE and “insert name of mismatched partners cop show here” were thrown into a blender and then reconstituted by the JJ Abrams TV assembly line. It’s clear that Abrams’ attentions are more on the big screen of late and his television efforts have suffered because of it. FRINGE left me cold and REVOLUTION is lucky to be on NBC or it would have (and should have) been given a mercy killing.

I love Karl Urban and Lili Taylor but little else in this promo jumped out at me. Zero humor, zero chemistry between the leads and visuals that look almost SyFy cheap.

VERDICT: FOX has found its new TERRA NOVA. That’s not something to brag about.  NOTE: the trailer for ALMOST HUMAN was pulled from the official FOX YouTube channel on 5/15/13 because of a “copyright complaint” by the studio that produces the show for FOX. Yes, that’s bizarre but, trust me, you’re not missing much.

SLEEPY HOLLOW

CLICK for more information on SLEEPY HOLLOW.

SLEEPY HOLLOW picked up the clue phone that ALMOST HUMAN ignored. We’ve got another fantastical take on the mismatched buddy cop drama but this one is quite intriguing. Kudos, too, for a cop show with a non-white female in one of the two lead roles. Maybe FOX has a new Mulder and Scully (with a 2013 makeover)?

Ichabod Crane is no longer a gangly nebbish. Instead, he’s a hotsy Colonial who has the misfortune of being revived in present day Sleepy Hollow. Not only does he hold the key to saving humanity (as hotsy Colonials, recently revived from a 250 year slumber, so often do), some doofus also woke up the Headless Horseman. Not only does this make for a potentially raucous good versus evil battle across time, it’s the perfect excuse to jazz up an already great promo with a really good beheading.

VERDICT: A promising cast of relatively new faces, an A-list production pedigree and what looks like a beautifully produced hour that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this could emerge as a sleeper hit (my bad pun not withstanding) against unscripted fare on NBC and ABC . It should at least score some decent sampling.

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

CLICK for more information on BROOKLYN NINE-NINE.

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE has a lot going for it. It’s got folks from 30 ROCK and the criminally under-watched PARKS & RECREATION behind it. The talented ensemble cast features Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews and Joe Lo Truglio, among others. It should be a slam dunk but the promo is dishwater dull and distressingly short on laughs (other than a few uncomfortable  pity chuckles). That doesn’t bode well for a comedy. My worry button is pressed pretty hard by the apparent lack of any on-screen sparks between Samberg and Braugher.

VERDICT: Samberg has a following (me included) but I’m not sure they’ll stick with him if the humor he has aced in countless digital shorts doesn’t translate to a half=hour weekly. This promo runs under four minutes but it felt much longer. I kept fidgeting and waiting for that “oh yeah, this will be funny” payoff. It never came. Looks iffy, especially in a tough time slot with a weak lead-in (see next entry). I hope I’m wrong.

DADS

CLICK for more information on DADS.

Oh dear! Where to begin with this stinkeroo? DADS looks so bad, it makes the cancelled TV Land crap fest RETIRED AT 35 seem positively brilliant by comparison. It looks so bad, I’d rather sit through a SMALL WONDER marathon than an episode of DADS. It looks so bad, if DADS didn’t come from the Seth MacFarlane tree house, it would never have gone to pilot.

Seth Green, Martin Mull and Giovanni Ribisi (my favorite Scientologist who isn’t Kirstie Allie) all deserve better than this. I don’t dislike MacFarlane (he was the only good thing about the Oscars this year) but I’m not in his “OMG! He’s, like, wicked f-in funny all the time” fan club. Even if you are a fan, I defy you to watch this promo and tell me you are jazzed about adding DADS to your DVR playlist.  I’m not easily offended, but the scene with the Asian employee made me embarrassed for all parties concerned.

VERDICT: Barring any schedule shuffling, it’s a crappy show in a crappy timeslot. Reality fans have THE BIGGEST LOSER on NBC, oldies and the undemanding flock to NCIS on CBS and ABC is launching what could be the hottest show of the Fall season: MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. That leaves scraps for DADS. Only a miracle (and/or the need to kiss the ring of Seth MacFarlane) will save this.

ENLISTED

CLICK for more information on ENLISTED.

Wait! A comedy that looks funny? How did that slip in here?

ENLISTED certainly owes a thing or two to STRIPES but that’s not a ding. This was the FOX pilot I was the least excited about but, the trailer took me totally by surprise. It has humor to spare and quite a bit of charm, to boot. ENLISTED looks just arch enough for the network but it is clearly swinging for a mass audience. Sure, the three brothers look NOTHING alike and there is the distinct possibility that all of the good gags are shown here. Still, I’d rather bet money on a comedy promo that makes you laugh than the two previous ones that don’t.

VERDICT: It’s marooned on Friday nights and has the aging RAISING HOPE as a lead in but, it’s the only comedy in the timeslot. Even if it does marginal numbers, ENLISTED could find its way to a full season pick-up and renewal by FOX. Big potential.

CLIPPED/SE: NEW FALL SERIES [NBC]

IN TWEET: A SPECIAL EDITION OF “CLIPPED” FEATURING EXTENDED TRAILERS FOR SIX OF THE NEW SERIES COMING TO NBC THIS FALL.

It’s Upfronts Week! The annual dog and pony show where West Coast network execs fly to New York City, series stars in tow, in order to convince East Coast media buyers that the new shows they just picked up don’t suck out loud. The mission: book as many ad dollars as you can in advance of the upcoming Fall season.

Sound fun? It’s not. The only people who like it are the newbies who enjoy a free lunch and presentations devoid of any spontaneity. Alas, like going to a wake for that strange uncle you never really felt comfortable with, it’s just something you gotta do. Why? Ah, sweet mystery of media life!

As the broadcast networks release promos and footage of their new series for this Fall, I will be posting them in special editions of CLIPPED. I’m not going to get too hung up on schedule information at this point because networks juggle and tweak quite a bit during and after Upfronts. Up first: NBC.

THE BLACKLIST

James Spader stars in THE BLACKLIST. CLICK to visit the official show site.

THE BLACKLIST is an international thriller starring James Spader. The plot borrows liberally from ALIAS, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and ARROW (seriously, watch the trailer and see if you can pick out all of the lifts from other sources). It’s slick, moody and looks wholly unremarkable in every way. The main attraction here is, of course, Spader who can be really great or a scenery-chewing bore (a-la BOSTON LEGAL).

VERDICT: Looks dicey. Has THE VOICE as a lead-in but I’m not sure that’s going to make for a smooth audience hand-off. Barring any schedule changes, THE BLACKLIST will also compete with established hits CASTLE on ABC and HAWAII FIVE-O on CBS. Tough slot for another crime-themed series.

THE MICHAEL J. FOX SHOW

Ana Nogueira and Michael J. Fox in THE MICHAEL J. FOX SHOW. CLICK to visit the official show site.

THE MICHAEL J. FOX SHOW stars, guess who, Michael J. Fox. It’s one of the funniest promos I’ve seen since MODERN FAMILY. Fox plays Mike Henry, a beloved New York news anchor juggling family, a return to his profession and serious health issues. Hilarity ensues…really. The trailer has more than its share of laugh-out-loud moments and pulls no punches when it comes to Fox’s own real-life struggles. Parkinson’s is not only part of the plot, it’s also the punchline for many jokes. My dad has Parkinson’s so this hits close to home…in a very good way.

VERDICT: Should be a hit for NBC. America loves Michael J. Fox and the show looks very strong.

IRONSIDE

Neal Bledsoe (L) and Blair Underwood in IRONSIDE. CLICK to visit the official show site.

IRONSIDE is a remake of the classic TV series of the same name. This time it’s Blair Underwood in the wheelchair instead of the late, great Raymond Burr. The promo isn’t great but Underwood usually is so, that makes this at least a show worth checking out when it debuts. Plus, when you first hear the snippet of the iconic IRONSIDE theme song, it does trigger a visceral wave of nostalgia.

VERDICT: I don’t think this will be NBC’s HAWAII FIVE-O but could be a sleeper hit for the network even if it does only marginal numbers.

SEAN SAVES THE WORLD

Sami Isler and Sean hayes in SEAN SAVES THE WORLD. CLICK to visit the official show site.

SEAN SAVES THE WORLD features the return of sit-com vets Sean Hayes and Linda Lavin. That’s pretty much where the good news ends. Based on the trailer, it looks like a tired mash-up of dinner theater humor and a Neil Simon play. Even the promo art looks “been there, done that.” Hayes is playing a less-flamey version of his WILL & GRACE character, here a single dad trying to “parent” with unwelcome help from his mother (Lavin).

VERDICT: Have you seen THE NEW NORMAL?

NOTE: YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO VIEW THIS VIDEO FROM ANY DESKTOP OR LAPTOP BROWSER. SOME MOBILE BROWSERS, HOWEVER, DO NOT SUPPORT VIDEO PLUG-INS. IF THAT IS THE CASE, CLICK HERE FOR A LINK TO THE VIDEO AND OPEN IN YOUR YOU TUBE APP.

DRACULA

Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars in DRACULA. CLICK to visit the official show site.

DRACULA is NBCs attempt to cash in on the vampire craze…two years after the craze has passed. While it does star Jonathan Rhys Meyers, has an impressive production pedigree and looks quite lovely, it is DRACULA in name only. It’s one of those “cherry pick a mythos” tales that will probably piss off more fans than it attracts. Still, I was wrong about ELEMENTARY and ended up loving that show.

VERDICT: It’s on NBC and scheduled for Fridays after GRIMM. Clearly enough people watch that show to get it renewed. This could make a good companion series. 60/40 chance in favor of DRACULA.

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

The cast of WELCOME TO THE FAMILY. CLICK to visit the official show site.

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY brings NBC back to the diversity well after the miserable failure that was THE NEW NORMAL. Here it’s out with the gay and in with Viva Latino! OK, that’s a slight exaggeration and, from the looks of the trailer, there is the potential for a solid performer here. The cast is uniformly strong, with Mike O’Malley, Ricardo Chavira, Mary McCormack and Justina Machado in the lead roles. This could be the show that finally gives the criminally underrated O’Malley, Machado and Chavira a chance to shine.

VERDICT: Big potential here. Where THE NEW NORMAL beat us over the head with gross stereotyping, this looks like a more gentle, warm and loving take on what really is the NOW normal across this country.

TRAILER: CAPTAIN PHILLIPS

Tom Hanks in CAPTAIN PHILLIPS. CLICK to visit the official site.

IN TWEET: IT’S TOM HANKS VS. SOMALI PIRATES IN “CAPTAIN PHILLIPS.” ONE OF THE MOST INTENSE TRAILERS I’VE SEEN IN MONTHS.

The Summer movie season is barely underway and, already, studios are promoting their tentpole Fall releases. Makes sense, of course. Strike while the people are in seats and packing theaters across the country. When I went to see THE GREAT GATSBY (click for my review), the last thing I expected was a trailer this intense for a movie starring Tom Hanks. It came straight out of left field.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS is based on the true story of the Maersk Alabama hijacking by Somali pirates in 2009. The trailer is particularly strong. Check it out below.

REVIEW: THE GREAT GATSBY

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan in THE GREAT GATSBY. IN TWEET: FINALLY! A BIG-SCREEN ADAPTATION OF THE F. SCOTT FITZGERALD CLASSIC THAT GETS IT RIGHT. LUSH, VISUALLY DAZZLING AND ULTIMATELY HEARTBREAKING.

By now you may have read reviews of THE GREAT GATSBY that bitch about the use of contemporary music, claim the film is all style and no substance or make it seem as though seeing the movie is an experience akin to watching a video game version of an American classic while riding a roller coaster.

Well, Old Sport, all I have to say about those critiques? RUBBISH! Baz Luhrmann’s gorgeous extravaganza is the first adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel that gets it right. It’s a summer blockbuster for adults.

THE GREAT GATSBY is a literary masterpiece I have adored for years. It’s a story rife with the alcohol soaked excesses of the idle rich set against a riotous Jazz Age backdrop. Critics who whine about the film depicting some of the major underpinnings of the source material just don’t get it. Have they read the book? Without these sequences of extravagance, THE GREAT GATSBY would be like a GODZILLA movie with no scenes of Tokyo being stomped.

Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki) and Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) living large at a party thrown by Jay Gatsby. CLICK to visit the official site for THE GREAT GATSBY movie.

What Luhrmann does particularly well is contextualize the parties, sexual indiscretions and drunken orgies. There is nothing about them that is romanticized or viewed through the rose colored glasses of nostalgia. As stylish and sumptuous as the film is throughout, it is not going to make you want to jump into a time machine and head back to Prohibition Era New York City. If you’ve ever been the only sober person in a room full of drunks, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

All of the iconic symbolism is intact and on display. The green light, the “inside vs. outside looking in” duality and, of course, the all-seeing gaze of Doctor TJ Eckelberg. It is all handled with deft skill by a director who clearly has a great deal of affection for the source material. Luhrmann knows what he is doing here and has enough faith that we do too. He resists the temptation to beat us over the head with visuals that would make him seem like the smartest guy in a room full of dummies. That’s refreshing.

The Gatsby mansion, located in the enclave of West Egg, Long Island. CLICK to visit the official site for THE GREAT GATSBY movie.Much has been made about the music featured in the film, the use of 3D and the lavish party sequences. If you’re expecting MOULIN ROUGE meets WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S ROMEO + JULIET by way of AUSTRALIA, you will be profoundly disappointed. This is Baz Luhrmann’s most restrained, earth-bound film since STRICTLY BALLROOM.

Based on what I read in advance of seeing THE GREAT GATSBY, I was expecting a circus sideshow. I’m now convinced I must have screened a different version of the film, one reserved for real people rather than the jaded, bitter, “too cool for the room” critics. An annoying bunch who seem incapable of reviewing a movie without hewing to the cinema-snob agenda or pulling the stick out of their collective asses.

The most offensively off-base screed, from Chris Nashawaty at Entertainment Weekly, references scenes that are nowhere in the film. It’s one thing to dislike a movie. It’s another thing entirely to express your distaste by making stuff up. So, here’s the quick and dirty guide to everything you’ve read about THE GREAT GATSBY that is overblown or completely untrue:

  • There are no scenes featuring hip-hop dancers or DJs spinning club hits. Yes, the soundtrack recording you can buy on iTunes or Amazon does feature a ton of contemporary music. However, only a fraction of it is actually heard in the film. The most intact song is Lana Del Rey’s haunting YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL, which is used to devastating effect. The rest of the cuts are sampled briefly and mixed with period-specific jazz and orchestral music.
  • There are no scenes in the 3D print that depict anyone or anything jumping into your lap, swinging out at you on trapeze or exploding in your face. This is not a Jazz Age AVATAR. Baz Luhrmann has given numerous interviews where he discusses his application of 3D and why he went there. It’s an effective use of the technology that draws you deeper into the proceedings. Before you even realize it, you become a participant in the parties at Gatsby’s mansion and a bystander for some of the more intimate, uncomfortable sequences that dominate the latter two thirds of the film.
  • This is not a manic freak show of party sequences and digital effects wizardry nor is it a 2 hour and 22 minute music video. In fact, I was surprised at how quickly Luhrmann transitioned from the excess to the intimate. It’s an elegant, three act approach that moves from the big party set pieces and period razzle dazzle to the reunion of Daisy and Gatsby and, finally, to the emotional drama and physical violence that sweep us toward a heartbreaking finale.

If you are not familiar with THE GREAT GATSBY, you might want to stop reading here to guarantee yourself a spoiler-free experience. The movie is a faithful adaptation of the novel and follows the plot right to the end.

The characters in THE GREAT GATSBY are often as vapid, empty and vile as they are fabulously wealthy. In fact, Luhrmann pulls no punches when it comes to the lack of morality of key characters or the way men treat women and minorities. This is a running theme in the movie that is not nearly as palpable in the novel. Tom Buchanan (played with loutish swagger by Joel Edgerton) is a racist, violent, old money bastard. Women are his to possess, toy with and screw. If they piss him off, he is not above a merciless backhanding. Tom’s frequent references to racial and economic superiority are tossed off as casually as the ice cubes he drops into his next cocktail. Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton) with Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki) looking on. CLICK to visit the official site for THE GREAT GATSBY movie.

There does, however, have to be some basic humanity to the characters or the film would quickly become an unpleasant bore. Luhrmann understands this and resists the temptation to turn Tom into a cartoon villain. There is no mustache twirling on display here (something that served the plot of MOULIN ROUGE quite well).

On some level, Tom does love both his wife Daisy (the luminous Carey Mulligan) and  his “wrong side of the tracks” mistress Myrtle Wilson (a nice turn by an almost unrecognizable Isla Fisher). Unfortunately, how and when he shows his affection is often too little, too late or destroyed by anger. For all his cocksure bravado, Tom Buchanan is an empty, insecure man. The guy who bristles when he is introduced as “a polo player” and never shows his true feelings for the women in his life until an outside force threatens to pull them from his clutches.
Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire, L) and Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) out for a wild spin. CLICK to visit the official site for THE GREAT GATSBY movie.

The emotional core of the film is fused by the twin flames of the friendship between Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and the romance between Daisy and Gatsby.

This is Maguire’s most accomplished big-screen work in ages and puts to rest all of my bitter memories of his whiney version of Spider Man. The framing device has Nick writing about his memories of Gatsby while going through therapy in a medical facility where he’s being treated for, among other things, his alcoholism. I’m not usually a fan of voice over narration but here it is used quite well. It’s an effective means of moving the story forward while also working in major passages from the novel. Maguire looks gaunt and wasted as he recalls his experiences on Long Island and does a nice job of making the transition from wide-eyed naiveté to broken man.

One of the biggest of many problems with the 1974 adaptation of THE GREAT GATSBY was the casting of Gatsby and Daisy. Robert Redford certainly looked the part but his aloof, detached take on the role obliterated any of the vulnerabilities and insecurities that make Gatsby’s ultimate demise such an epic tragedy. Then there was the criminal miscasting of Mia Farrow. Let’s just say a cardboard cut-out would have had more chemistry with Redford. Her Daisy was big screen Ambien.

Here, Carey Mulligan is exactly how I envisioned Daisy every time I read the book. A beautiful creature who craves the love of a lifetime but not as much as she does the trappings of wealth. She is that elusive bird, the one that will perch on your windowsill until you stop putting out the seed. Given the choice, Daisy opts for the easy path, that of the “beautiful little fool” who is as much the creator of her tender trap as she is the victim of it. Mulligan brings Daisy to life in wonderful and subtle ways that make her story arc even more achingly sad.

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby. CLICK to visit the official site for THE GREAT GATSBY movie.

The key to any adaption of THE GREAT GATSBY is going to be the actor cast in the title role. Leonardo DiCaprio nails it in ways both expected and delightful. The camera loves him here more than any film he has starred in as an adult yet, this is not an adoring picture of the man that is Jay Gatsby or the man that was James Gatz. Luhrmann lures the audience into a seductive world of glamorous excess,  just as Nick Carraway is drawn in. Then the director lets DiCaprio gradually chip away at the self-created artifice.

The two most powerful scenes in the film owe a great deal of their success to DiCaprio’s astute, nuanced and wonderfully quirky take on the role. He is an awkward, jittery mess during his manufactured meet-cute with Daisy at Nick’s cottage. Gatsby goes out of his way to convince Nick to set up the meeting without telling Daisy its true purpose but then cannot resist his control freak impulses. He turns the cottage into a Mini-Me version of his own stately castle, an edifice that itself exists solely to impress Daisy. The scene is as funny as it is tragic. You can’t help but know all of the beauty and perfection on display is about to collapse out from under these characters.

The climatic scene at The Plaza Hotel has gotten a fair amount of press because Luhrmann has pointed to it as a prime example of the reason he wanted to film a 3D version. I’m inclined to agree with him. Indeed, the sequence is a stunner. It’s that rare combination of acting technique and technical prowess that work in concert to create a raw, visceral and shocking explosion of emotion. In an otherwise deliberately measured performance, DiCaprio’s volcanic eruption after being taunted by Tom is a sight to behold. In 3D, you feel like you are witnessing something very bad and very personal that you probably should not be seeing. The audience I saw the film with gasped and then fell deadly silent for the rest of the scene.

THE GREAT GATSBY was the first novel that made me cry. Even though I knew the ending and could gird myself for the death of Gatsby, the tragedy of his life and the magnitude of his unrequited love for Daisy Buchanan, I was moved to tears more than once during this movie. It’s as over the top as it is grounded. As vulgar as it is profound. As hollow as it is full of resounding emotion. It is THE GREAT GATSBY and this is all just as it should be.

RONTHINK RATING: A

This is one of the extended TV trailers for THE GREAT GATSBY and also one that I think captures the essence of the movie better than any of the promo videos I’ve seen. Enjoy!

LOCK-ON: THE “MUST HAVE” GAMES

Must Haves Header

BY PETE HOGAN – EXCLUSIVE TO RONTHINK

Going through my catalog of 60 or so games, I started thinking about which titles I would never trade or sell. Here’s the list!

The games that made the cut are those that I have the most fun playing and find myself constantly returning to. If you haven’t yet experienced these games, they are definitely worth your time. If you are new to console gaming, these titles should be among the first you add to your library. Either way, they are all back catalog options which means you can get them at a great price. Give them a shot and let me know what you think!

Yes, it got a ton of bad press, so curse me all you want for having THE FORCE UNLEASHED on my list. No matter! Being a STAR WARS fan, I find myself popping this game back in my Xbox whenever I want my SW gaming fix!

The story takes place between REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE. The action revolves around Starkiller, Darth Vaders’ secret apprentice, whom you control. Things obviously don’t go as planned while you are jerked around between the light and dark sides of The Force…yadda, yadda. The story is actually pretty inconsequential and landed with a resounding critical thud.

What is important is that you have a freaking lightsaber and Force powers (yes, even as a Sith)! There’s just something oddly cathartic about using Force lightning to fry a stormtrooper or Force choking someone then lifting them in the air and tossing them to their death or lopping off a persons’ arm (or head) with a  lightsaber! All the Force powers are here and they are extremely well done. The game is also impressive graphically and uses the original film score, which any STAR WARS fan knows is a must.

THE FORCE UNLEASHED does have its flaws. The levels get somewhat repetitive and there is an extremely frustrating Star Destroyer sequence. If you’ve played the game you know what I’m talking about. Those annoyances aside, there’s just something about this game that keeps calling me back.

THE FORCE UNLEASHED II is also available but the game is so short it should have been a DLC add-on rather than a full release.

In RED DEAD REDEMPTION you play as John Marston, a former outlaw who is now seeking, you guessed it, redemption. This is a massive open world game from the makers of the GRAND THEFT AUTO series. It’s an absolute blast to play because there is so much to do.

The main campaign will take you 30-40 hours to complete and there are tons of side missions (including cattle rustling, duels and poker games). The combat is very easy to pick up and the "Dead Eye" feature, which essentially slows the environment down and lets you target multiple people at once, is one of the gameplay highlights.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION also integrates a very cool honor system which goes up and down based upon the choices you make while playing. This also causes the AI to adjust accordingly. Ride into town with a low honor rating and people run and hide, shops close, etc. Make positive choices and people are much more forthcoming and helpful. This feature increases the replay value of the game because you can change the outcome of events every time, depending on the mood you’re in!

In BIOSHOCK you are Jack, a guy who discovers the underwater city of Rapture after crash-landing in the ocean. Built by tycoon Andrew Ryan, Rapture was supposed  to be an underwater paradise. That plan went horribly awry thanks to the discovery of ADAM plasmids. These little beauties give people superhuman powers. Unfortunately, they also fry brains. A whacked out populace eventually results in Rapture becoming a dangerous wasteland. Your mission: escape from the city.

Along the way you gradually learn what happened to Rapture and encounter the Little Sisters, young girls infected with the ADAM plasmids. They are protected by the Big Daddies; essentially men in diving suits on steroids. These baddies are well armed, with weaponry that runs the gamut from giant rivet guns to flamethrowers and a really big drill. Take out a Big Daddy and you then have a choice to make: save the Little Sister or harvest their ADAM, which kills them. Your decisions will dramatically change the way the story ends.

Combat is pretty standard, at least as far as weapons go (pistol, tommy gun, flamethrower, etc). What makes the fighting extremely fun is injecting yourself with different plasmids. Doing so gives you a range of additional powers; everything  from being able to set people on fire to putting things into a deep freeze. You will also need to arm yourself with specific plasmids at specific times in order to gain access to key areas and progress through the game.

Graphically, BIOSHOCK is stunning. The underwater city has a cool “Art Deco meets Captain Nemo” feel to it. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys a great FPS. You won’t be disappointed!

I collected comic books growing up and BATMAN was one of my favorites. Unfortunately, most superhero videogames fall short and end up being little more than thrown together tie-ins for the next summer blockbuster. BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM is that rare exception. It is easily one of the greatest superhero games ever!

The action begins after the capture of the Joker. Batman delivers his nemesis to the Arkham Asylum only to discover that the Joker wanted to be captured all along. He takes control of the facility and sets the inmates free, a number of whom were put there by Batman himself. Now trapped inside Arkham, with the inmates literally running the asylum, Batman must fight to restore order using everything at his disposal. Weapons include his own fists as well as a host of great gadgets in that famous utility belt.  Everything from the grappling hook to various Batarangs are at the ready.

Gameplay is incredible. You can use a grappling hook for a climb to the rooftop and then go into "Detective Mode" via a filter on Batman’s cowl. This allows you to assess the movement of bad guys before attacking. You can then use your cape to jump and glide for a surprise landing behind thugs.

Facing down multiple enemies in hand to hand combat is also a blast. You can string together attacks with the push of a button and take the baddies out. It makes the combat seamless and gives the proceedings a movie-like feel.

BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM looks amazing. Particularly effective are the levels where Batman is injected with a hallucinogenic drug by The Scarecrow. What pushes this game over the top is the amazing voice talent of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill, who steals the show as The Joker! Both did the voices for the animated BATMAN series and it was great to see them brought into the fold for the videogames.

The sequel, BATMAN ARKHAM CITY, is also worth mentioning here. Given a choice, ASYLUM is the hands-down winner. ARKHAM CITY is more open world and, while a great game in its own right, loses something by getting so big in scope.

ALAN WAKE is the closest thing to video game version of a Stephen King novel. You play the title character, a successful horror novelist. During your vacation in the town of Bright Falls, WA your wife mysteriously vanishes. While trying to find her, you discover that the unfolding events are actually the plot of a novel you don’t remember writing. The town, some of its citizens and the local wildlife have been taken over by “The Darkness.” It’s a nasty predicament which renders those affected both insane and almost invincible.

Armed with a flashlight and various firearms, you must first burn the darkness away with the light. Only then will you be able to attack and kill your enemies. Sounds simple, right? Wrong! The flashlight runs on batteries and will go dead if you don’t keep your eye on the power meter and make a quick change to a fresh set. Not doing so means a pitchfork through the head or some other ghastly demise. This flashlight/weapon combo elevates simple combat into an immersive and nerve-wracking experience.

There are numerous twists and turns along the way. Given that most of the game takes place at night, there are also some genuinely creepy moments. The action is divided into six episodes, each with end credits and a “previously on ALAN WAKE” opening. There are also TV screens placed randomly throughout the game which, when turned on, show episodes of a show called “Night Springs." It's no coincidence that this the same show Wake was a writer on at the start of his career. The TV sets make for a cool pit stop and welcome respite when you need a break from being attacked by possessed town folk!

ALAN WAKE was critically well received but, initially, didn’t perform that well at retail. The fact that it was released day and date with RED DEAD REDEMPTION, a strategic blunder on the part of Microsoft, gets the lions share of the blame. Slow start aside, the game has amassed a major cult following and spawned AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, a recent DLC “sequel” that is worth buying!

Rumor has it a legitimate ALAN WAKE sequel is coming with the next gen Xbox console. I hope this is true and can't wait to see where the story goes!

TRAILER: GRAVITY

George Clooney stars in GRAVITY. CLICK to visit the official site.

IN TWEET: GEORGE CLOONEY AND SANDRA BULLOCK IN SPACE! A FIRST LOOK AT THE FALL RELEASE “GRAVITY” FROM DIRECTOR ALFONSO CUARON.

There has been more than a little curiosity about the Fall release GRAVITY. Less because it stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock and more because of the guy behind the camera, director Alfonso Cuaron, and the roller coaster development history of the film.

Oscar-nominated for CHILDREN OF MEN (Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing) and the amazing Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN (Original Screenplay), Cuaron also directed HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (one of the only films in that series I could get through. Yes, I’m a muggle and damn proud of it). He writes, directs, produces, edits, chops, slices and juliennes. Alfonso Cuaron is a talent to be reckoned with and I am a big fan. Still, there are dark clouds on the GRAVITY horizon.

For a movie with only two principle characters, casting (especially for Bullock’s role) became an A-list turnstile. We’re talking about a process that started in the early months of 2010 after Universal put the film in turnaround and Warners picked it up. Everyone from Angelina Jolie (who wanted $20 million to grace us with her presence) to Natalie Portman was attached to the project at one time or another. Once Bullock signed and didn’t flee, Clooney replaced Robert Downey Jr. and a picture was born!

I suspect we are seeing the highlights of the boom boom in the GRAVITY trailer because the main plot of the film takes place after the harrowing disaster seen here. Clooney and Bullock are tethered together and stranded in the silent darkness of space. I wouldn’t mind hanging out with either of them…but not under these circumstances.

LEGACY: RAY HARRYHAUSEN

Ray Harryhausen. CLICK to read about the documentary on his life.

IN TWEET: RAY HARRYHAUSEN, ICONIC VISUAL EFFECTS PIONEER, HAS DIED. HE WAS 92. JOIN OUR TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND WITH A LOOK AT VIDEO AND IMAGES OF HIS FINEST WORK.

There are many well-known people who make movies. Then there are the legends; pioneering geniuses who shaped and forever changed the modern cinema experience. RAY HARRYHAUSEN was in that class. The iconic visual effects wizard died in London today at the age of 92.

You would be hard pressed to find a filmmaker in the sci-fi, fantasy or horror genres who doesn’t credit Harryhausen as one of their influences. From his work on classics like MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949) to lesser entries that were made infinitely more enjoyable because of his involvement (like the otherwise dreadful 1981 CLASH OF THE TITANS), Ray Harryhausen became a box office draw in his own right.

My father mentored me into the world of Harryhausen by taking me to matinee re-issues of JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963), THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1958) and THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1973). The special effects in these films are among the most celebrated examples of Ray Harryhausen’s visual wizardry and with good reason: stop motion animation is a painstaking art that few ever truly master. Harryhausen worked with his hands; not on a keyboard or drawing tablet but, instead, on articulated models. He moved each of them in tiny, incremental steps that were shot frame by frame.

The best way to pay tribute to Ray Harryhausen is to enjoy images and video of his finest work. These are my personal favorites: full stop-motion animation effects sequences from JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (the amazing skeleton fight), CLASH OF THE TITANS (the famous encounter with Medusa) and THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (Kali dances, a scene that freaked me out as a kid).
