CLIPPED SE: THE MALALA INTERVIEW

IN TWEET: THE FULL, EXTENDED INTERVIEW WITH MALALA YOUSAFZAI FROM “THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART.” DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND WATCH.

It’s rare that I watch an interview several times back to back and am moved to tears every time. That’s the effect the incandescent Malala Yousafzai has on people. Jon Stewart’s is rendered speechless several times during his conversation with her. His reaction is genuine and profound.

There’s really no need to blast the Taliban assassins who tried to murder Malala Yousafzai because, in all honesty, that single cowardly act has become one of the biggest epic fails in the history of failed terrorist crimes. Plus, we all know there’s a special place in hell for them.

Included here is the original in-episode interview with Yousafzai from THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART as well as the extended after-show discussion. Please note that these embeds are streaming directly from the Comedy Central site. Some mobile browsers may not support the required plugins necessary to view the videos on you phone or tablet.

OPINION: VISIT MOUNT DOUCHEMORE!

L to R: Ted Cruz, John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Rush Limbaugh. Image created by Ron Hebshie for RONTHINK.

IN TWEET: LET’S DEDICATE A NEW NATIONAL MONUMENT TO GRIDLOCK AND GOVERNMENT BY EXTORTION, COURTESY OF THE GOP.

What better way to “celebrate” the temper tantrum that is the current GOP-orchestrated shutdown of the government than immortalizing four of the key players that got us here? After all, future generations should have a striking visual reference to point to when their children ask: “Mommy and daddy, what was the Republican Party and who was responsible for killing it?

I would suggest erecting Mount Douchemore in a gerrymandered district of the United States. Select an abandoned swath of land after the strip mining operation leaves town and fund the venture with a special tax levied on the estate of the Koch Brothers (once they kick off, of course).

The first image carved must be of Ted Cruz. After all, his ego is already massive and he’s a monumental asshole…just ask his law school compadres. People say Cruz is smart but that’s like saying a chicken with its head cut off is a fast runner. Sure it is…until it finally drops dead. Ted Cruz cares about one thing: Ted Cruz. He’s not on some damn fool idealistic crusade here. He really thinks he has a shot at being President. As scary as that prospect might be for those of us who don’t live in the Fox News Bubble, I sincerely hope the GOP hands him the nomination in 2016.

Next up: Speaker of the House John Boehner. He’s derisively referred to as John “Boner” but that incorrectly give this flaccid guy credit for having political wood. He doesn’t…even on a good day. A wet noodle has more stamina and staying power. Boehner never met a fight he didn’t run screaming from like a whiny bitch and every time one of the wackadoos from the Tea Bagger sect says “Jump, Johnny.” Boehner says “How high?” Then he cries.

The third slot on Mount Douchemore is reserved for Eric Cantor. When he isn’t looming over Boehner’s shoulder like one of those terrorists you see holding a gun to the head of a hostage in a ransom video, Eric Cantor is talking. In fact, give this colossal ass hat a microphone and he will verbally masturbate himself until everyone within earshot is sticky from the massive discharge of jerk juice. I can think of no other member of the GOP who can look as dickish as Cantor does simply by putting on his glasses and showing up.

Finally, Mount Douchemore wouldn’t be complete without the visage of the guy who runs the party: Rush “Oxycodone” Limbaugh. No offense to that little gerbil Reince Priebus, but Captain Fat Ass is the real Grand Poobah of the GOP. Every weekday, Rush anchors himself to a berth in his radio studio and spews three hours of pure comic gold. Oh, his devotees believe anything and everything he says as if it was gospel truth. Of course, the rest of us know it’s almost as big a steaming pile of bullshit as Rush is himself.

Though she didn’t make the cut for a slot on the monument, when Michelle Bachmann isn’t needed on the mothership, she  will be  the Head Docent and one of several rotating GOP heads that pop up from the holes in the live “Whack A Righty Mole” attraction. Gimme my mallet! Bam! Bam! Bam!

When all is said and done, a party that has no respect for the People certainly deserves none in return. The GOP has shown nothing but contempt for the President and the Democratic Process as a whole. Meanwhile, the Affordable Care Act remains the law of the land and the exchanges are open for business. See what all the GOP foot stomping is about by visiting HEALTHCARE.GOV. Remember: every time you click, you hit the GOP with the Obamacare stick. Thwap!

CLIPPED: PASTA PERSPECTIVE

Barilla Ad
IN TWEET: OUR SUGGESTION FOR THE NEXT BARILLA AD CAMPAIGN.

UPDATE: 11/4/2013: Looks like the bottom line at Barilla might be taking a hit. As Think Progress and others have reported, the pasta peddlers are in a bit of a damage control panic. Too bad, so sad. As millions of consumers already know, finding a hate-free pasta brand is remarkably easy. While Barilla scrambles to throw together a silly "diversity" thing, I'll keep enjoying more delicious Prince Pasta. Barilla, vaffanculo!

At the request of Guido Barilla, I happily returned two boxes of his pasta and two bottles of his sauce to my local super market for a full refund. Given that I don’t fit his stated definition of a family and would never want to sully him with my dirty gay money, I simply switched to Prince pasta (happy 100th).

The main competitors to Barilla in the US, Ronzoni (like Prince, owned by New World Pasta) and Bertolli, have both jumped on the “dump Barilla” bandwagon and I couldn’t agree with them more. Sure, it’s a marketing stunt but at least I know where they stand and can feel better about more of the products I spend my money on.

As you’ll see in the video below, at least one of these companies was on the right side of the issue long before Guido acted like such a…well…guido. Enjoy this clever, nicely produced ad by the Bertolli folks that was made way back in 2009. Barilla would hate it.

UPDATE: VA CLAIMS BACKLOG

Tommy Sowers was sworn in at the VA this past summer. CLICK HERE for the full story from Veterans Today.
IN TWEET: NEW VA ASSISTANT SECRETARY TOMMY SOWERS FACES THE MUSIC (AKA RACHEL MADDOW) AND ANSWERS SOME TOUGH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DISABILITY CLAIMS BACKLOG.

Yesterday I wrote extensively about the train wreck currently hobbling the Veterans Administration. Men and women returning from active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan (along with Vietnam Veterans trying to file Agent Orange-related claims) are waiting a year or more in some cases before the VA makes a decision on their case. Up until last night, most of the little we have heard from the Veterans Administration has come from poorly received public testimony and a single appearance by Erik Shinseki on CNN this past weekend. We now have a new voice to add to the mix, thanks to the dogged persistence of Rachel Maddow.

Tommy Sowers, new to the VA, sat down with Rachel Maddow last night for a a tough round of Q&A. I have to say, the guy does seem sincere. He’s a vet himself and the 2010 Democratic nominee for the U.S. House of Representatives in Missouri's 8th congressional district. He started the interview sounding a little too sunshine and roses for Maddow’s comfort but, as always, she was tough and asked the right questions. Once it was clear that she was not looking for his head to be delivered on a platter, things loosened up and Sowers was remarkably forthright.

Sowers does have a tough job ahead of him and his ability to impact change is only as good as the commitment to change from those running things at the VA. Is he giving vets genuine hope or is he just an empty suit making hollow promises? As the opening of the interview with Maddow reminds us, the VA has a shameful track record of making lofty commitments that they have yet to deliver on. As they say, talk is cheap. I want to have some faith in the promises made by Sowers but, as it stands, only time will tell.

There is no question this is a major crisis (when you hear the stats regarding the percentage of claims still on paper, you’ll see why) and I reiterate the call for President Obama to step in and take a leadership role here. With that said, Sowers ended the interview promising to give Maddow unfettered access to one of the VA claims processing centers that apparently has gone from disaster to model of efficiency. That handshake agreement was pretty amazing to see and I, for one, can’t wait for the visit on a future show.

Here is the Sowers interview from THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW last night:

As a reminder, the IAVA and other leading advocacy groups are calling for President Obama to step in and make ending the claims backlog a national priority. RONTHINK added its voice to that call yesterday and I reiterate the need for Presidential leadership. If you have not done so, please lend your voice to the cause.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
  1. CLICK HERE to visit the IAVA website and sign the online petition to demand that President Obama step in and take charge of the claims backlog solution. Share the petition with your Facebook friends and Twitter followers after you sign. Adding a personal message to these shares is also helpful.

  2. Call both of your Senators and your Representative and demand similar action (that’s a total of three calls, folks). Let them know you are a constituent who feels that 2015 is too long to wait for an end to the current disability claims backlog. Calling your elected officials has a much bigger impact than emails or other auto-response options. Always be clear, courteous and concise when speaking with staff members who answer phones in the offices of elected officials. CLICK HERE to find your Senators and their contact numbers. CLICK HERE to find your Representative in Congress and their contact numbers.

  3. Call the White House and express your support for our veterans and ask that President Obama step in to end the claims backlog at the VA. Again, always be polite to whomever answers the phone. Let them know your are aware of the statements that have been made by Undersecretary Hickey and Secretary Shinseki and are not satisfied with their responses. Leading veterans support organizations are calling for President Obama to intervene and you support that call to action. Extra points for sending a hand written letter. OPINION: OBAMA MUST END VA BACKLOG

Allison Hickey , Undersecretary for Benefits for the Veterans Affairs Department.
IN TWEET: THE BACKLOG OF DISABILITY CLAIMS AT THE VA IS A DEBACLE THAT REQUIRES PRESIDENTIAL INTERVENTION NOW. OUR TAKE ON THE CRISIS AND WAYS YOU CAN HELP.

NOTE: THIS POST IS DEDICATED TO MY DAD, AN ALL AROUND COOL GUY AND A VETERAN. I GREW UP HEARING STORIES OF HIS DEALINGS WITH THE VA. I WISH I COULD SAY LESS-THAN-WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES LIKE HIS WERE A THING OF THE PAST. SADLY, WHERE THE VA IS CONCERNED, IT LOOKS LIKE WE'VE GONE FROM BAD TO MUCH WORSE.

Meet Allison Hickey , Undersecretary for Benefits for the Veterans Affairs Department. Her Aqua Net hair and frozen grin aside, this is one do-nothing bureaucrat with little to smile about. She presides over a backlog of disability claims from veterans that is staggering in size. If you were less than inspired by her appearance in front of a House panel last week, you’re not alone. Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL), chairman of the House Veteran’s Affair’s Committee, called for Hickey to resign. It’s probably the only time I’d be inclined to agree with him.

CLICK HERE FOR AN INFOGRAPHIC LOOK AT THE CLAIMS BACKLOG.

Of course, axing Hickey will do little if anything to solve the problem but, it would be a tiny moment of bloodless, off with their heads-like catharsis. Her stunningly inept testimony wasn’t enhanced much this week by her boss, U.S. Secretary for Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki. He popped up on the Sunday morning political chat circuit to crow about his “goal” of ending the backlog by 2015. Huh?!?

I’m no math wiz but I’m thinking if I’m an Iraq or Afghanistan War Vet missing, say, a limb or two that kind of “goal” really wouldn’t give me the  warm and fuzzies. What the hell kind of response is a 2015 “goal” of ending the paperwork logjam when the shit pile is already more than a year deep? If this is the best we can do for the men and women we sent off to fight two wars, we are nation that should be profoundly ashamed of itself.

CLICK HERE FOR COLUMNIST JOE KLEIN’S SPOT-ON ASSESSMENT OF THE CRISIS.

Personally, I think Shinseki has been a major disappointment as the head of the VA. Given his personal history, this is a a guy who should have been all over this mess and prevented it from become a crisis. Instead, he has demonstrated a frustrating knack for not being present in the moment and appearing to ignore all the smoke that was billowing before the big fire . Remember, this claims backlog is not new nor is it something that just appeared, as if by magic, at Veterans Affairs offices around the country.  Perhaps instead of reiterating the fact that the VA and the DOD seem incapable of playing in the same sandbox, Shinseki should have gotten off his butt and done something about it much sooner.

Only after allowing the backlog to explode into a first-class disaster, and only after Allison Hickey did such a piss-poor job during her testimony, did Shinseki finally stroll out from wherever he was hiding and start talking. Of course, after hearing his plans, he might as well have maintained radio silence. One thing is clear: it’s time for President Obama to take the reigns and make ending the VA backlog a top priority. Anyone with half a brain knows there is a problem here. Tough words and moral outrage are only as good as the authority behind them. Obama must fill the leadership gap here and turn talk into walk.

Heard of dog shaming? Now we have VA shaming. CLICK to visit the IAVA and see how you can help #endthevabacklog.

With all of the attention paid last week to the 10th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War, it would have been nice to see some of that spotlight given to the claims crisis. Those who duped us into war could have taken a small step towards an apology by hitting the airwaves and demanding action. Instead, they chose to take part in a campaign to re-write history. Major media outlets who enabled the march to war could have dedicated some above the fold space to this story. Instead, most chose to engage in self-loathing or blissfully ignorant hand-wringing. Leading progressives, who never miss an opportunity to bitch about the Iraq War, could have been equally outraged about the present-day crisis. Instead, most chose the path of least resistance by engaging in another round of self-congratulatory preaching to the anti-Bush choir.

CLICK HERE TO EXPERIENCE THE BACKLOG FROM ONE VET'S PERSPECTIVE

I’m not saying it was a bad thing to call out Donald Rumsfeld for Tweeting lies or for any media outlet to take a critical look at the lead up to Iraq War but, it is profoundly troubling that we spent a ton of time looking back without dedicating equal time to where things stand right now. That inability to focus on the present while learning from the past is how we get pushed into wars based on lies. It’s also how situations like the claims backlog at the VA are allowed to fester and become living nightmares. That things like this happen over and over again isn’t anyone’s fault but our own. We can point fingers all we want but, if we don’t at least admit we are all part of a problem then we are never going to find a solution.

Fortunately, at least where the VA claims crisis is concerned, each of us can help. There are some simple steps we can all take that, collectively, will help move things forward. It took me less than 15 minutes today to complete the top three items on this list. It’s certainly the least any of us can do for the brave men and women who chose to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as those veterans of past wars who are still fighting for basic disability support.

I will continue to post key updates on the VA claims backlog crisis (here and on Twitter). If you’re still sitting on the fence, check out this clip from The Rachel Maddow Show. She has been a tireless voice of support for all veterans and this piece from her show last week definitely lit a fire under me.

OPINION: LIAR, LIAR WAR QUAGMIRE

Condoleeza Rice, gap-tooth hag and former Secretary of State, was one of the architects of the Iraq War. CLICK to see where she and the rest of the gang are now.
IN TWEET: TO MARK THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF THE IRAQ WAR, SOME ARE TRYING TO RE-WRITE HISTORY. WE’RE NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN.

BOONDOGGLE (noun): a project that is considered a useless waste of both time and money, yet is often continued due to extraneous policy motivations.

Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. While anyone who is awake and has at least one foot planted in reality knows the truth, there are some folks who are clearly hell bent on re-writing history. Just so we’re all starting at the jumping off point, here are the facts:

While some might greet this list with a “well, duh,” judging by Tweets, interviews and right wing media reports yesterday, it’s pretty obvious that an attempt to re-position the Iraq War as a liberation effort is well underway. It’s also important to acknowledge the last bullet point on my list because hindsight is 20/20. I remember all too well being in the minority at the time when I would question the flimsy evidence we were being presented or post public comments supporting folks like The Dixie Chicks.

While it’s certainly offensive that these latest attempts at revisionist history have been timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War, it’s even more reprehensible when you remember that this same war resulted in the deaths of almost 4,500 US troops and well over 100, 000 Iraqi citizens. Even if there was an iota of truth to the “war of liberation” fiction, those combined body counts would add up to be a pretty shoddy effort at freeing a repressed people.

There’s a ton of great writing out there on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War (some of it is linked to throughout this post) but I found this timeline from Mother Jones to be especially illuminating. CLICK HERE to check it out.

Rachel Maddow did a great piece yesterday focusing on Donald Rumsfeld that I think is particularly well done and worth watching.

One of the best catch-all summaries of the war came from Chris Matthews yesterday. I was happy to see him take the news media to task for dropping the ball.

I was on vacation in Thailand 10 years ago this week. I watched then President George W. Bush announce the start of military operations in Iraq on the only TV screen available at our tiny resort on Ko Samui. It was both bizarre and disconcerting to be a world away from home at the start of a war. It was also especially frustrating because even then I knew we were being lied to.

Though we were the only Americans in the room when the announcement was made (outside of the US  the war was extremely unpopular from the start), at no time did anyone direct so much as an angry glance our way. On the contrary, all of our interactions with those from other countries were exceedingly positive and deeply gratifying. In fact, the next morning I was out with a pair of Muslim fishermen helping them with their crabbing in the tidal pools.

I mention all of this because I’ve never forgotten this window of time and these are memories that remind me of the basic good of most people. These experiences and the lives of those lost in the Iraq War must not be forgotten. It is equally important that we do everything in our power to ensure that such a grand lie is never repeated.

This was Donald Rumsfeld's jaw-dropper of a Tweet on the occcasion of the 10th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War.

If you missed the excellent MSNBC documentary HUBRIS, here it is in six parts. Each is a thematic segment that, as a collective, takes a damning look at the campaign of lies that led to the Iraq War.

HUBRIS will be re-broadcast on Friday, March 22 at 9pm E/P on MSNBC.

OPINION: THE YAHOO! BITCH GLITCH

CLICK for a full bio of Yahoo! president and CEO Marissa Mayer

IN TWEET: YAHOO! DEFINITELY NEEDS PRESS…JUST NOT THE KIND OF PRESS CEO MARISSA MAYER HAS BEEN GENERATING OF LATE.

Meet Marissa Mayer, a cautionary tale in the making. Don’t let the warm smile and sparkling eyes fool you. She’s what happens when an apple falls far from the Google tree, rolls down a storm drain and settles under that withering Yahoo! bush. You know, the one clinging to life in the sunlight deprived corner of the internet garden.

It’s been almost two weeks since  Silicon Valley flipped out over a leaked memo from Yahoo! HR big wig Jackie Reses. Buried deep in a shit pile of sunshine and roses was the lead. In short, scrubbed of the HR warm and fuzzy, if you currently work for Yahoo! from a remote location, one of the following will be changing in June: your location or your employer. Cue lead balloon.

To be fair, it doesn’t take much to raise hackles in the ol’ SV but this particular story took on a life of it’s own and went global. Of course, Reses was merely the messenger, delivering a decree handed down from the ivory tower of Marissa Mayer, newbie president and CEO of beleaguered media company Yahoo!. In her infinite wisdom, Mayer decided an “all or nothing” policy regarding working from home was the best way to deal with a mountain of bad morale, poor productivity and the general uselessness of pretty much anything Yahoo!. Apparently her 13 years at Google translated into a mind set as convoluted and ass-backwards as the mobile platform she helped build.

Since her decision to call all worker bees back to the Yahoo! hive, the chatter on Mayer has been spewing from two camps: the bigger and louder voices have chewed her up and spit her back out. In this version of reality, Mayer is a cold and calculating bitch on wheels. A bean counter who thinks what is good for her goose is not something to be shared with all the little ganders in the flock. A smaller cadre has rallied around Mayer, calling her decision some version of “brave/bold/decisive.”

Personally, I think both groups have it wrong. Mayer is neither hero nor villain. She is merely another in a long line of CEO’s who simply don’t get it. It’s a combination of tin-eared imperiousness, tone-deaf hypocrisy and a decision making process fueled by the panic that ensues when you take over a company teetering on the edge of oblivion. You can also throw in the ego stroke that comes from having your underlings just outside your door, available to shout “how high” when you say “jump.” Making this a uniquely bizarre “only in the tech world” oddity is the fact that a company like Yahoo! is scuttling working remotely. Last time we checked, the mobile office and lifestyle platforms are both important pillars to future of the Yahoo! brand. You don’t see Apple pushing iPhones in the press while instituting a landline-only policy in Cupertino. Just saying, it’s an odd call even by Yahoo! standards.

I don’t envy Mayer. She’s the latest muckety muck coupled to the Yahoo! executive train wreck (plus here and my favorite one here). If she keeps it up, she just might be the caboose. What a company like Yahoo! needs is a tough, visionary and inspirational leader. An individual willing to trim the fat (and dead weight) while also making it clear that he or she understands the company from the ground up. It’s a tricky balancing act that requires juggling humanity, humility and honesty while maintaining an unflinching fix on the light at the end of the tunnel. Ultimately, you need a CEO who can rally the same troops he or she is shaking up and shaking out.

Mayer is undeniably smart and talented but that doesn’t make her the right person for the job. Book smarts rarely translate into street smarts and Yahoo! needs someone with that cred. Hint: a former engineer does not a CEO make. In fact, very little of what Mayer has done since taking the reigns points to her being the salvation of a once great brand. Free meals and cozy sit downs will only take the company so far.

Even if she was 100% right in her thinking, there is no way on earth anyone paying even a bit of attention could envision a scenario under which the Reses memo wouldn’t turn into a nightmare. When your people are down, a kick in the teeth is NEVER the way to perk them up. Even if you deploy every semantic contortion available, what amounts to a take away (and, in the case of Yahoo!, an entrenched employee perk) is going to be hugely unpopular. When coupled with the appearance that the decision is devoid of rhyme, reason and compassion, you have an internal and external PR crisis to deal with. Insult, meet injury.

I have no doubt that there is considerable dead weight and poor productivity in the Yahoo! ranks. If there wasn’t, the company would be sitting pretty. It isn’t. At the same time, why would you anger both the good employees and those who should be shown the door? Where is the case study proving that a former work from home deadbeat, when anchored to a cubicle, blossoms into a model employee? Why create a policy that penalizes everyone and perpetuates the very mindset that contributed to the decline of the company in the first place? Why? Because it’s the path of least resistance. It requires zero creativity and virtually no heavy lifting on the part of higher ups. It’s what a smart person does when they are low on executive savvy and oblivious to the reality going on just outside their well-insulated suite.

Making matters worse for Mayer, developments since “Memo-Gate” have not exactly played in her favor. Sure, some have jumped to her defense and pulled out the gender card. I’d be more willing to entertain the anti-woman meme (which, it should be noted, IS a legitimate problem in Silicon Valley) if Mayer didn’t show an uncanny talent for playing into the hands of her harshest critics. Start with the revelation that, in the same breath as denying new Yahoo! mommies the ability to work from home, Mayer had a nursery built next to her office so she could care for her newborn son. True, Mayer covered the cost of building the nursery but what percentage of the Yahoo! masses could afford such a luxury (if they were accorded similar privileges) and what kind of message does such an expenditure send? Adding to the the veneer of overpaid excess came news today that Mayer received a $1.1 million bonus for five months of work in 2012. It doesn’t matter if she deserved it or not, it’s a story that perpetuates an unflattering narrative.

For shits and giggles, let’s give Mayer the benefit of the doubt and pretend this brouhaha was just a tempest in a teapot. If she’s such a cracker jack CEO, what the heck was Mayer thinking (or not thinking) when she blew a potential publicity coup recently? In what is already being called a major strategic blunder, the Yahoo! CEO decided to appear on the TODAY SHOW day and date to the massively hyped return of Robin Roberts to GOOD MORNING AMERICA. It just so happens that one of the major success stories in the Yahoo! hopper is Robin’s Journey, the popular GMA blog that chronicles Robert’s battles with cancer. In fact, I linked to the blog last week in a tribute to Robin Roberts. What better platform for Mayer to announce new Yahoo! product launches than on GMA, their partner in an existing and thriving co-branded venture? To make matters worse, it appears as though no one from Yahoo! or Mayer’s office picked up the phone and asked to appear on GMA, a request that ABC reps said would have been enthusiastically embraced.

It’s a mind boggling oversight and does little to bolster the Mayer brand. One also has to wonder what fate would have befallen an underling if they made a mistake of similar magnitude. Clearly Mayer working from the Yahoo! campus didn’t improve her strategic thinking here. Of course, it doesn’t seem like she worries all that much about rules she imposes on others also applying to her.

Bottom line, I would love to be proven wrong regarding Mayer. I would happily eat a helping of crow and be the first to offer hearty congratulations if she is able to right what has been a very stubborn ship. Mayer is by no means an island unto herself and it’s only fair to note that there are circumstances in play that are simply beyond her control. Still, her actions and missteps do have consequences that reach far beyond the Yahoo! campus. Certainly its no coincidence that Best Buy, itself mired in a mass of red ink and profit woes, just announced that working from home would soon be a no-no. Rather than Yahoo! setting an example worthy of following, it appears to be another disappointing case of the blind leading the blind. That’s not something to cheer about.

LEGACY: HUGO CHAVEZ

CLICK for a full bio of Hugo Chvez

Hugo Chavez, the flamboyant and controversial leftist President of Venezuela, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 58.

Hated outside the confines of the country he led with a passion almost equal to the devotion shown to him by legions of followers in Venezuela, Chavez remains as much of an enigma now as he was when he first assumed power in 1999. An outspoken champion of the poor and downtrodden, he also had a habit of being his own worst enemy. Chavez opted for inflammatory rhetoric far too often to curry favor with the United States. At the same time, he didn’t seem to give a rat’s patootie. This made him even more  fascinating to anyone trying to figure out on which side of the good guy/bad guy fence Chavez belonged.

Ultimately, that mindset would prove hopelessly simplistic and ill-suited for gaining real insight into such a complex man. Perhaps, like so many leaders before him, Chavez would prove impossible to pigeonhole.  In the end, as someone who has never set foot in Venezuela, it’s not my place to judge. Instead, I’d like to offer a different take on Hugo Chavez and one, I think, that makes a fitting epitaph.

Citizens Energy, founded by by former U.S. representative Joseph P. Kennedy II (D-MA), is a Massachusetts-based non-profit. Among it’s many pursuits is the Citizens Energy Oil Heat Program (CEOHP) which delivers discounted heating oil to the poor and elderly in 25 states and on Native American tribal lands in nine additional states. The program itself is a partnership with CITGO, a wholly owned subsidiary of the national oil company of Venezuela.

When Kennedy approached the petroleum industry regarding a collaboration that would eventually become the CEOHP, only CITGO offered to help (see PSA video below). While critics of Chavez derided the effort as a propaganda campaign against the Bush Administration, the program has been an unqualified success. Since starting work together in 20o5, Chavez and the people of Venezuela have donated more than 200 million gallons of home heating oil to the poorest of Americans through the CEOHP. Most of the recipients would have gone without heat during the coldest months of the year, dooming many to not surviving the winter.

Propaganda? Social activism? Humanitarian outreach? Where Chavez is concerned, his part in the CEOHP is probably a combination of all three. Though the number of critics has dwindled since 2005, some still look at the collaboration as a bad thing. I prefer to view it as a success and a blueprint for ways businesses, governments and non-profit organizations can work together across borders and political divides. Certainly other major oil companies had an opportunity to step up. None of them did and none of them have jumped on the bandwagon since. If Chavez did score propaganda points back home, so be it. The lives of poor and elderly Americans helped by the donations from CITGO through the CEOHP seem more than worth the price.

OPINION: POPE-A-DOPE

Pope Benedict XVI
IN TWEET: DING DONG, THE POPE IS GONE. WELL, SORT OF. OK, NOT REALLY. ENOUGH OF THE FREE PRESS. THIS AIN’T THE SECOND COMING.

With all due respect to my fellow Catholics and those still held in sway by the huge money suck that is The Vatican, enough of the fawning, non-stop coverage of the “abdication” of Pope Benedict XVI. Aside from the fact that we, as a nation and a people, have a laundry list of more important things to worry about, Popey is one slick cat and a snake oil salesman of the first order. Thump your Bibles all you want but I have a sneaking suspicion the Jesus I know and love would be pretty darn tootin’ horrified to see the trappings of wealth dripping off His Holiness. The guy dresses in gowns only a Montauk drag queen could afford and is whisked off to a summer residence in a helicopter that would give Donald Trump a chubbie.

On a good day, I find it hard to stomach the bizarre combination of monarchy, dictatorship and huge closet that is The Vatican. The past couple of weeks have made the hypocrisy even more glaring and reminded all of us that the Catholic Church remains one of the most overfed, self-important and massively dysfunctional institutions on the planet. With a checkered past of genuine good marred by an ongoing habit of always finding a new way to step in it, no one has hurt the Catholic Church more than the church itself. It’s like the Tea Party of organized religion. Who cares if most people don’t agree with your stand on much of anything that matters? What difference does it make that your influence is waning and your place at the table of relevance is in serious jeopardy? Just keep on keepin’ on even if you have no idea why you’re doing it or how much collateral damage you cause in the process.

Even more offensive, Pope Benedict XVI has apparently decided that his definition of “abdication” is “church funded vacation getaway, with full pay and benefits.” You see, folks, Popey isn’t really going anywhere. He’s decided to keep his Pope name, hang on to the Papal robes and bestow upon himself the title of Pope Emeritus. WTF?!?! If The Vatican was a beauty pageant and Popey the winner, he’d quit half way through his year-long reign but still hang out on the promo tour wearing the sash and tiara.

The hubris doesn’t stop there. In addition to padding around various Papal residences and buzzing about in the Pope-o-copter, Popey has also co-opted the Papal secretary (who is HOT, by the way). Yep, even though he isn’t the Pope anymore, he will hang on to the Papal secretary. Good for Popey, bad for secretary who will now have to do double duty, serving the new Pope as well and the one who just won’t go away. Speaking of the new Pope, whoever gets the nod will do so with the knowledge that Popey is just a shout (or less) away. Yes, he has also made it known that he will be at the ready to offer as much advice and counsel as he decides he is in the mood to dole out. Gosh, what a swell, selfless and totally not ego maniacal holy guy. Yeah, right.

Last night, Rachel Maddow took aim at the smoke and mirrors abdication. It makes a fitting conclusion to this post.

OPINION: GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!

IN TWEET: MLS STAR ROBBIE ROGERS COMES OUT AND SCORES THE MOST IMPORANT “GOAL” OF HIS YOUNG CAREER. BRAVO!

Though it’s becoming more and more of a yawn when a TV or film star comes out, it’s still a rare event in the world of professional sports. That’s probably the reason for all the buzz this week surrounding MLS player Robbie Rogers announcement (on his website) that he is gay. His statement is poignant, moving and refreshingly honest. I identified with just about every word and hope it becomes a touchstone for those who have yet to find their truth.

I only wish I was as brave, poised and self-assured as Rogers when I was 25. In reality, I was doofus of sorts in my 20’s, equal parts geek, confused and angry at the world. I was living a lie and I knew it but was too scared to reveal the truth in anything other than the safest of circles and circumstances. I had convinced myself that I could only be 100% me if I was certain I would receive only enthusiastic support in return (e.g. from other gay guys, random lesbians and a cadre of wonderful female friends).

In theory, I would talk a big game about agreeing with Harvey Milk's assertion that coming out was the best way to chip away at homophobia. In practice, I was pretty much a "let some one else do it" aficionado. It wasn’t until 1997, at the age of 31, that I finally had “the conversation” with my family. I was inspired to finally cut the BS and spill the beans thanks in no small part to a TV series and the “The Puppy Episode.”

Telling your family is often the most difficult step in the deeply personal process of coming out. Though I didn’t know it going in, my parents and sister were immediately supportive and never once flinched. In fact, it brought us closer as a family. Sadly, for every story like that, there are many that don't have a happy ending.

Even at a time of sweeping changes in attitudes and opinions towards gays and lesbians in the U.S., homophobia and anti-gay violence are still alive and well. Bullying is very real and the suicide rate among LGBT and questioning youth is still slarming. That’s why I was so thrilled that Rogers took such a brave step this week. I didn’t have a pro sports career, endorsements and a national spotlight to contend with like he did. That’s a much bigger reality to grapple with but Robbie Rogers did it and, more importantly, took action in a way that is bound to help others.

Aside from what must be a huge load off his psyche, Rogers did more than shake off the shackles of his own dishonesty and self-loathing. He set an example where examples are needed and, sadly, still the exception. You can be a talented and popular professional soccer player, all around athlete, entrepreneur and also just happen to be gay. That's a huge step in the right direction for this country.

Robbie Rogers is a star and an inspiration in every sense of those words. I hope this is just the first step in an even more amazing journey for him, he deserves nothing less than the best. Even more important, his coming out stands as reminder to any kid out there struggling with their sexual identity: YOU ARE NEVER ALONE AND YOU MATTER!
